Italy has placed an order for two MQ-9A Block 5 Reapers from General Atomics Aeronautical Systems, Inc. as part of an expansion of its long-endurance surveillance fleet.

The remotely piloted aircraft carry sensors for full-motion video and moving-target tracking, along with synthetic-aperture and maritime radars.

They can remain airborne for up to 26 hours, operate at altitudes of 45,000 feet (13,716 meters), and carry payloads weighing up to 4,600 pounds (2,087 kilograms).

Compared with earlier variants, the Block 5 features upgraded communications datalinks and automatic takeoff and landing capabilities.

The aircraft also uses a fault-tolerant flight-control system and triple-redundant avionics architecture designed to keep it operating if a component fails.

Mediterranean ISR Operations

Italy deploys its Reapers for intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance operations over the Mediterranean, strengthening its presence across the strategic waterway.

The two aircraft will expand the Italian Air Force’s existing Reaper fleet when delivered by the end of 2027.

The purchase is part of a Foreign Military Sale through the US Air Force that also includes new ground control stations.
