Poland’s WB Group and Norway’s Kongsberg have signed an agreement to jointly develop and produce autonomous maritime platforms.

Signed on a defense convention in Kielce, the deal centers on multi-sensor reconnaissance platforms that could also carry effectors for striking surface targets.

It covers the integration of electro-optical sensors, electronic nodes, command-and-control architecture, and weapons for operations in the Baltic Sea and other maritime theaters.

The companies are expected to build on existing Polish technology,  including WB Group’s StormRider family of unmanned surface vessels, while developing joint offerings for European defense customers.

“Security requires genuine cooperation — between nations, armed forces and industry,” WB Group CEO Piotr Wojciechowski stated.

“By combining Polish and Norwegian expertise, technologies, and production capabilities, we can jointly create top-class solutions.”

Boosting Domestic Economy

The agreement comes as Warsaw pushes foreign defense companies to invest in Polish manufacturing and work with domestic industry when competing for government contracts.

Kongsberg plans to expand its industrial presence in Pomerania, where it is seeking 200,000 square meters (2,152,782 square feet) of land for new production facilities to open between 2027 and 2028.

“If a foreign company wants us to be interested in its products, we expect it to invest in Poland and co-create solutions with our defense industry,” Polish Deputy Defence Minister Magdalena Sobkowiak-Czarnecka said.

“We will consistently support such cooperation from the government.”
