The Indian Air Force has launched its inaugural Dronathon 2026 in Jaisalmer, Rajasthan, bringing domestic defense companies, startups, and other innovators into three days of operational drone trials.
Vice Chief of the Air Staff Air Marshal Ashutosh Dixit inaugurated the event at the Pokhran Field Firing Range.
The Dronathon moves emerging technologies beyond controlled demonstrations and into demanding field conditions, allowing military evaluators to assess their reliability, effectiveness, and adaptability against evolving threats.
More than 20 participants are demonstrating unmanned aircraft and associated technologies for surveillance and reconnaissance, autonomous operations, swarming, electronic warfare, and counter-unmanned aircraft missions.
Testing systems in Pokhran’s harsh desert environment allows the air force to assess how indigenous platforms withstand electronic interference, severe thermal updrafts, and dust while supporting distributed operations.
Driving Industry Localization, ‘Mutual Learning’
Dronathon 2026 reflects India’s push to accelerate the battlefield adoption of domestically developed uncrewed systems as low-cost drones and loitering munitions reshape modern warfare.
The event allows military personnel to engage directly with developers, refine operational requirements, and identify technologies that could move into further testing and procurement.
That direct engagement could shorten procurement timelines and strengthen India’s domestic defense ecosystem under the Atmanirbhar Bharat self-reliance initiative.
“The event is designed to help stakeholders to witness emerging … technologies along with their operational demonstration and foster mutual learning,” the Indian Ministry of Defence stated.
“The [Indian Air Force] remains committed to building a technologically advanced, indigenous and future ready force capable of meeting security challenges in the rapidly changing operational environment.”
