The Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) has showcased new versions of its battle-tested “Sea Baby” unmanned surface platform during a fresh round of trials in the Black Sea.

Two weaponized variants were revealed: one mounting a gyro-stabilized machine gun capable of automatically tracking and identifying targets, and another fitted with a multiple launch rocket system firing up to 10 Grad munitions.

Both platforms can reportedly travel over 1,500 kilometers (932 miles) while carrying up to 2,000 kilograms (4,409 pounds) of payload. They are also equipped with reinforced engines and a modernized navigation suite.

“Our drones have changed the balance of power in the Black Sea and have proven their effectiveness. The new generation of Sea Baby is even more effective,” said SBU Head Lieutenant General Vasyl Malyuk.

The crowdfunded sea drones were tested at an undisclosed location in Ukraine, with footage showing both close-in engagements and longer-range strike scenarios.

The SBU said additional variants are already in development, but withheld further details on capabilities and deployment timelines.

Black Sea ‘Mediator’

The development of the next-gen Sea Baby drones comes at a time of heightened tension between Ukraine and Russia over the Black Sea — a strategic corridor that keeps Ukrainian grain and global trade moving.

Control of these waters has become central to both nations, shaping supply routes, sanctions pressure, and military maneuvering.

Last June, the SBU claimed responsibility for an attack on the Crimean Bridge, a structure over the Black Sea that transports Russian supplies to annexed Ukrainian districts.

It revealed that an early Sea Baby variant was used in the attack.

“The work to clear the Black Sea of the Russian fleet will continue. The enemy will feel the full power of our technological developments,” Malyuk stated.
